Optimizing Efficiency and Durability in Electrical Enclosures

Sept. 26, 2024
Blass’s strategies for balancing rapid time-to-market demands with robust control panel designs are critical for developing adaptable systems capable of accommodating future expansions and evolving requirements.

Control Design recently heard Concept Systems design team manager Michael Blass’s insights on NFPA 79 and proper electrical equipment installation. He emphasizes that while NFPA 79 is crucial for ensuring safe human-machine interactions and consistent electrical safety standards, its applicability varies depending on the project's requirements.

This nuanced approach helps engineers decide when to prioritize NFPA 79 compliance versus other standards, optimizing design and operational efficiency. Blass also highlights the importance of proper cable routing and labeling to protect system integrity.

He notes that sharp edges, vibrations and improper strain relief can cause premature failure of cable insulation, while clear labeling simplifies troubleshooting and maintenance by ensuring the physical wiring aligns with design documentation.

Regarding termination devices, Blass discusses the pros and cons of screw clamp versus spring cage technology. Read his full interview in this article from Control Design.
