HMS Acquires Red Lion Controls to Expand into North America

Jan. 24, 2024
The acquisition is seen as strategically beneficial for both companies, offering synergies in terms of products, geographic presence and cultural aspects.

HMS Networks has announced its acquisition of Pennsylvania-based Red Lion for $345 million, a move aimed at strengthening HMS' presence in North America and facilitating cross-selling of both companies' products, Control Design reported.

HMS, which stands for "hardware meets software," emphasizes integration in industrial automation. The acquisition of Red Lion provides HMS with a hardware-component entry to expand the sales of its products in the United States, tapping into the growing awareness of Internet of Things and increased software usage in the operational technology arena.

As the industrial sector in the U.S. gradually becomes more software- and data-driven, the merger positions HMS to serve a broader customer base with both hardware and software offerings, especially in open PLC communications.

Red Lion's core product lines, including Access, Connect, and Visualize, complement HMS' existing offerings. The acquisition brings new opportunities for HMS in areas such as cloud connectivity, edge intelligence, remote device management, and data visualization in challenging industrial environments.
