Opto22: SNAP I/O Module with CAN Connectivity

June 27, 2012
The SNAP-SCM-CAN2B is a high-speed serial communication module for acquiring data from generators, motors, sensors, actuators and other industrial devices connected to a Controller Area Network (CAN).

CAN and CAN-ready devices are popular for use in industrial applications such as factory automation and building control due to the simplicity and low cost of CAN wiring. With the SNAP-SCM-CAN2B module, industrial engineers can incorporate data from CAN devices into their control application just like the analog, digital and serial I/O signals received from other SNAP I/O modules installed on the I/O rack. The module is used with Opto 22's SNAP PAC System, which includes programmable automation controllers (PACs) and Ethernet-based I/O systems. This module does not transmit; it has one input for receiving data from devices on a CAN network. Like all of the company’s SNAP I/O modules, this one is optically isolated from the equipment and devices it connects to, as well as from other modules on a shared I/O rack.

To use the SNAP-SCM-CAN2B module in a control application, the Opto 22 CAN Integration Kit for PAC Project (Part # PAC-INT-CAN) provides an example strategy to enable an Opto 22 PAC system equipped with one or more SNAP-SCM-CAN2B modules to receive data from devices on a CAN protocol network. The integration kit supports CAN protocols J1939, NMEA 2000, and ISO 11783. The Opto 22 CAN Integration Kit for PAC Project can be downloaded at no cost from the Opto 22 website.
