The OPC Foundation has initiated a significant effort to enhance interoperability across IT and cloud platforms by utilizing its OPC UA communication strategy, Automation World partner publication Control reported.
This initiative is particularly relevant for automation engineers as it targets applications like AI-driven data analytics, industrial data spaces, digital product passports, the industrial metaverse and digital twins.
The goal is to establish a cloud-reference architecture that adheres to global regulations, such as the EU's Data Act and Cyber Resilience Act, while also optimizing OPC UA standards for broader data sharing.
This effort includes using OPC UA companion specifications and information models in cloud-computing services, aiming to ensure seamless integration and data exchange across diverse digital ecosystems.
By collaborating with cloud industry leaders like Alibaba-Cloud, AWS, Huawei, Microsoft and SAP, the OPC Foundation aims to harmonize existing working groups and initiate new ones focused on cloud-centric applications, thereby reducing costs and improving the usability of OPC UA Information Models in cloud environments.
