Cost Efficient and Reliable Measurement
Position and motion sensor specialist Posital has announced that it has expanded its range of absolute rotary encoders and inclinometers to include support the popular Modbus RTU communications interface.
Modbus RTU is a low-cost, easy-to-implement communications protocol that is commonly used in small to mid-sized control systems (up to 32 nodes). Available for almost four decades, it is supported by many programmable logic controller (PLC) manufacturers and has been used in a wide range of applications, ranging from solar panel positioning to controls for packaging systems and mobile machinery. The Modbus RTU protocol makes use of RS485 transmission standard with unshielded twisted-pair cabling. This combination can communicate reliably over distances of up to 1,200 meters, even in the presence of electromagnetic interference:
- Low-cost, easy-to-implement communication system
- Magnetic multiturn sensing without gear or battery
- Programmable measurement resolution, zero setting, and direction
- Well established & supported by most PLC manufacturers
- Available in a wide range of mechanical configurations
Posital IXARC Encoders With Modbus RTU
Posital IXARC encoders with Modbus RTU interfaces are available in a wide range of mechanical configurations. Customers can select exactly what they need in terms of the housing material and level of environmental protection, shaft type and diameter, mounting flange and connector type. Customers can also choose between single- and multi-turn measurement ranges. For multi-turn models, the rotation counter is powered by energy harvested from the rotation of the device’s shaft, eliminating the need for backup batteries and reducing maintenance costs.
Modbus RTU Also Available With TILTIX Inclinometers
Posital’s Modbus support extends to the company’s TilTix range of inclinometers. These devices are used in material handling equipment, solar panels, safety systems for mobile machinery and anywhere else it is important to monitor the tilt angle of equipment or components.
