Global automation solutions provider NovaTech is pleased to announce the next release of its distributed control system (DCS) software, D/3 Version 16.2. This release incorporates greater system security by default and makes maintaining the D/3 System more straightforward than ever.
“Corporate connectivity and remote access to DCS is becoming mainstream. Modern systems have significantly less isolation from the outside world than predecessor systems, creating a greater need for security. D/3 Version 16.2 leverages both NovaTech and Microsoft’s feature sets to give end-users the tools they need to strengthen their industrial control system cybersecurity,” said Chris Kourliouros, vice president of product marketing, NovaTech Process Division.
Cybersecure servers and workstations
Windows Server 2019 and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC install a level of hardening by default that is significantly more secure than previous Windows operating systems. Version 16.2 is fully compatible with all aspects of the latest Windows security, including Secure Boot, Windows Firewall, Data Execution Prevention (DEP), User Account Control (UAC), and Microsoft Defender Antivirus.
Controller security
In addition to a built-in firewall, the Process Control Module 5 (PCM5) incorporates a Trusted Platform Module (TPM), which is a dedicated microcontroller designed to secure hardware and software through integrated cryptographic keys. Version 16.2 now utilizes signed D/3 applications, which are validated by the TPM at runtime to prevent unauthorized code from running in PCM5 controllers.
Centralized software update management
Timely and consistent application of patches is critical to a secure control system environment. The new D/3 Update Manager allows a system administrator to remotely manage and deploy D/3 software updates for an entire D/3 System from a central location.
OPC UA
OPC UA is widely touted as a secure industrial communications technology for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0 applications. OPC UA was designed with security in mind and thus has security integrated throughout the set of specifications. The new D/3 OPC UA server supports all UA methods of security modes, cryptographic algorithms, user authentication, certificates, and private keys.
“D/3 Version 16.2 provides many important features to help our customers with cybersecurity and system administration, but that’s only one piece of the puzzle. I would also encourage all D/3 users to conduct a cybersecurity threat and risk analysis of their existing industrial automation assets. We offer products and services to help with that,” said NovaTech cybersecurity product manager, Alex Shnaydruk.
