A little more than a year since Siemens purchased RuggedCom Inc., a manufacturer of data communications network systems, the company has released its first product under the Siemens RuggedCom brand. Intended for use in electric power, transportation and defense applications (though it can be used in any harsh environment), the Ruggedcom RSG2488 features up to 28 non-blocking Gigabit ports (copper or fiber) in a compact 1U chassis.
Capable of operation from -40 to +85 degrees C and with high immunity to EMI, per IEEE1613 and IEC61850-3, the Ruggedcom RSG2488 features an extruded aluminum enclosure and fanless design.
The rack switch also features a modular vertical loading design allowing 10/100/1000TX, 100FX or 1000SX ports to be added or exchanged in the field. Siemens RuggedCom claims that the RSG2488’s modular structure and hot swappable power supply design simplify maintenance and allow for fast, low-cost re-configuration as requirements change.
Siemens reportedly purchased RuggedCom Inc. in March 2012 to improve its access to the North America and Asia-Pacific markets. Siemens is positioning the Ruggedcom family of products alongside its own Scalance product family in a portfolio of Ethernet solutions for mission-critical applications in harsh environments.
