Viper vechile switches from Westermo have been chosen to create a data communication network for the passenger information system for an intelligent train fleet to be operated by Stadler Pankow GmbH, Berlin.
The FLIRT (Fast Light Innovative Regional Train) articulated trainset comes in units of two to six cars with two to six motorized axles. It was originally developed for the Swiss Federal Railways and first used in 2004. The trains have since been installed in various European cities.
Westermo (www.westermo.com) supplies on-board communication equipment to many of the world’s rail car manufacturers, public transport authorities, system integrators and railroads. The next-generation FLIRT train system will use Westermo’s IP train concept, which creates a robust network infrastructure using an Ethernet switching and routing system.
Deliveries of the Viper switches with and without power over Ethernet began in early 2013. All products used in the system are compact in design and have a wide power range, making them suitable for installation in rolling stock applications.
